- [ ] add info on bitlbee daemon
Soooo…, I happen to like using IRC and IRC clients. And what an awesome idea to bring every other form of chat into the same client, one ring to rule them all. And since I have Weechat set up well and good, I can even access these from my Android.
But how can we have all these other forms of chat, like Facebook, AIM, MSN, Google Hangouts, etc, brought into our IRC client?!
With Bitlbee, woohoo!
These will start out as the roughest of notes, and hopefully I can fill them out further at a later date. As well, they will be focussed to installation on Ubuntu 16.04 GNU/Linux, so you will need to adapt for your system.
In order for the bitlbee-facebook install to work, you will need a new enough version of bitlbee. The instructions are to add the following to apt repository, you can put it in a file named
bitlbee for instance.
deb http://code.bitlbee.org/debian/develop/xenial/amd64/ ./
You will also need the key, provided here, https://code.bitlbee.org/debian/release.key.
Then you can
apt install bitlbee-dev bitlbee-libpurple.
To add Facebook functionality to bitlbee, you’ll need the following repository info (suggested filename is
deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jgeboski/xUbuntu_xenial/ ./
The key is at https://jgeboski.github.io/obs.key. Then you can do
apt install bitlbee-facebook.
For Google Hangouts, I haven’t had a chance to review the installation method, but you can find it here, https://bitbucket.org/EionRobb/purple-hangouts.
You will want to register, so you can save, make sure to follow best practices, and then go through the available help commands.
